Nature-Based Sessions

What is a Nature-Based Walk & Talk Session?

A Nature-Based Walk & Talk session is exactly how it sounds.  It is essentially a session that takes place outdoors, while walking!  Nature-based sessions can involve a myriad of locations, activities, and benefits depending on client needs.

Nature-Based Walk & Walk sessions utilize techniques from a broad, nature-based approach called "Eco-Therapy" where nature activities are integrated into a therapy session or other healing modalities.  In the ever growing world of virtual dependence, this alternative approach to therapy could offer just the type of embodied, experiential growth many of us need today.

What are the benefits of a Nature-Based Session?

Nature-based techniques are relatively new in terms of a systematized approach to therapy or other healing modalities, however nature-based sessions have been around informally for quite some time.  Even Freud met with client outdoors for walks!  Even still there is growing evidence that outdoor sessions could be beneficial for many reasons, especially for those who do not relate to the traditional settings for self improvement.

Some of the benefits of a nature-based session include greater access to grounding and mindfulness practices, metaphorical insights offered by nature itself, exercise, bilateral stimulation through the act of walking, experiential learning, and much more.

One of the most rewarding parts of an outdoor sessions can be having a shared experience with one's practitioner. Talking about life inside of an office or online is very different from experiencing it in real time. It is much easier to hide behind our usual cognitive processes and a wall of words when sitting indoors or in front of a computer screen. Being outdoors on the other hand draws in real-time emotions felt in response to one's environment and therefore invites more authenticity and more mutual observations for both parties involved. All of these components can be opportunities to strengthen the bond between client and practitioner and to learn together through shared experiences.

Simultaneously nature is somehow so natural and yet so magical.  It invites us to be here in this moment as a human beings while also drawing out our creative abilities, flexibility, and internal wisdom.  It can increase your sense of connectedness to the natural cycles of life, to your body, and to others who share this earth with you.  What a gift it is to learn from this great teacher!

How does a Nature-Based Walk & Talk Session work?

There are many ways a Nature-Based session could be used, however I generally like to divide sessions into  two categories. "Tool building sessions", which can be used to break up virtual meetings and practice mindfulness and grounding techniques, and "Exploration sessions", which can be used as the primary approach for those who prefer to spend most sessions outdoors.

Tool building sessions can be used on occasion to build skills in mindfulness and grounding techniques, both of which can be extremely beneficial for nervous system and emotional regulation. In session we can use our senses to tune into our surroundings, practice feeling our feet on the ground, and start to integrate mindful activities into every day life.  Even on occasion, outdoor sessions can be a helpful break from virtual overload and to help deepen interpersonal understanding through experiential learning together.

For others with a strong interest in having sessions outdoors, the movement and exposure to nature essentially becomes the primary way we approach each session.  Every observation, experiential element, and even disruption can become useful as learning opportunity.  We can also use the environment to create metaphors for your experiences and create embodied movement when you're feeling stuck.  As a result exploration sessions are much less structured than a tool building sessions and more organic.

It is best to go over the logistics of a Nature-Based prior to the first outdoor meeting and assess for level of interest in doing a session outdoors.  I can help you decide whether you want to use it on occasion or as your primary approach for a Counselling or Mentorship session, depending on what service you are receiving.

Keep in mind that your interest level can impact how receptive you are to the techniques involved.  If you are interested in integrating Nature-Based sessions for the first time in your personal-development journey, try to trust that the process is unfolding as it is meant to even if it looks different than what you expected.

Once we understand your intention going into those sessions, we can mutually decide where to meet and make detailed plans for things like privacy risks and weather concerns.  I will provide consents and handouts to prepare for your first session such as what to bring and how to prepare.

Are there any risks?

Any therapy or healing modality has risks which are worth considering before deciding if it is right for you.  The most common concerns when it comes to an outdoor session is lack of privacy, disruptions such as inclement weather, and physical considerations like lack of immediate access to a bathroom and/or slight increased chance for injury.

While I would never try to convince a client to participate in a Nature-Based Walk and Talk session without them showing prior interest, some clients may find that the benefits outweigh the risks in their case.  With a clearly established plan beforehand, various concerns may be less worrisome than one might expect.

I guide clients through a series of assessment questions and brainstorming options in order to ensure that sessions go as smoothly as possible and to help protect your privacy.  We will also discuss your physical wellbeing such as your fitness level and what type of terrain and setting would be best for you.

How do we get started?

As of now I do not see clients in office.  I only offer virtual sessions and Nature-Based Walk & Talk sessions.  It is for this reason that first meet with clients virtually for our first two sessions or more to clarify your intentions, go over logistics, and ensure your readiness for meeting outdoors.  During that time we will also set a location to ensure everything goes smoothly during the meeting time.
